Storm Damage FAQS

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY PROPERTY IS DAMAGED BY A HAILSTORM? Roof damage signs: missing shingles, dents on metal, flat roof cracks. Interior leaks from the ceiling or windows. Get a post-storm inspection to prevent future issues.

DOES MY INSURANCE COVER STORM DAMAGE? Home insurance does cover storm damage, but check coverage details, deductibles, exclusions, and limitations in your policy. Read the fine print.

HOW QUICKLY SHOULD I ASSESS AND TAKE ACTION AFTER A STORM? Get an assessment right away to see if any immediate repairs are needed to prevent further damage, then we can help you assess from there.

HOW LONG WILL INSURANCE ALLOW ME TO DO REPAIRS? Typically most insurance companies allow 1-2 years to get repairs completed after the date of loss. We generally recommend getting the work completed ASAP

WILL MY INSURANCE RATES GO UP? Most insurance policies have a separate deductible for hail and wind claims, and they categorized differently by insurance companies from other claims . Homeowners are considered not “at fault” from a weather event, so premiums do not go up as a direct result of filing a hail/wind claim.

How to File a Claim Yourself

Call your insurance companies claims line directly and let them know there was a weather event that damaged your property. Generally speaking, you just need two pieces of information:

  • Where the damage occurred on your property

  • Date of loss (storm date)

They will then have an adjuster come out to your property to inspect in 1-2 weeks, or depending on availability.

In order for the best experience and outcome, we recommend the following:

  • Call the 800 number claims line directly, don’t try to file a claim with your local agent

  • Do not wait a period of time after a storm for a better “time” or when you are less busy

  • No need to upload any photos, if they ask. It’s their job to visit your property and take their own photos

  • You don’t really need to provide them with many specifics of the damages when making a claim. The adjuster has a process will assess everything on your property regardless
